The house seemed eerily quiet the next morning. Too quiet when she knew her aunt was down in the living room. With the mirror.
She hadnât slept well that night, tossing and turning as strange memories kept swimming up to greet her. What if there had been something in the mirror and she left her aunt down there alone with it, without warning? Not that Aunt Tracy would have believed her. âAunt Tracy the mirror has a monster inside of it.â Her aunt would have had her committed so she could take the house and sell that as well.
Judy swung her legs over the side of the bed and slipped her feet into fluffy slippers under her bed. She didnât want to get up, but her body wasnât going to let it be an option any more.
She crept down the stairs, her slippered feet scuffing along the hardwood treads.
âAunt Tracy?â
Nothing. No movement, no annoyed demand for coffee or the angry retort to let her sleep. Nothing.
She reached the bottom step and entered the living room. The room was empty. She took a quick glance around the room, but Judy could find no sign of her aunt.
She listened to the house, trying to hear the faint shift of feet, or splash of water from the bathroom. She was greeted with silence. No one moving coffee cans around the kitchen. No one trudging up the stairs in a huff. Nothing but her own heart beating.
âAunt Tracy?â she asked again, her voice taking on a quiver.
Judy took in the rumpled sheets on the couch, and the locked front door. Nothing seemed out of place other than the complete absence of her aunt. The lamps hadnât been turned over, Judyâs book still lay on the side table, and even the TV remote sat on the coffee table exactly where it always had been. No one had broken in, and Tracy had no way of locking the door behind herself.
Judy took a step toward the entry room, and the two suitcases that had been stacked there. They were gone as well, as was Aunt Tracyâs jacket that had been hung on the door.
Maybe she left, Judy thought. Called a cab and loaded up her suitcases before Judy could wake up to kick her out personally. It was possible, but some nagging feeling in the back of her mind, a cold shiver down her spine, kept Judy from believing that.
She crossed to the couch and picked up the sheets. As she lifted the first sheet something smacked onto the floor and skittered across the mahogany wood, disappearing under the couch.
Judy got down on her knees and peered into the dark recess. Two eyes glowed back at her. Glass eyes glittering from the light. Reaching under the couch, Judyâs hand trembled as she wrapped her fingers around the wire frames and pulled the glasses out from under the couch.
Aunt Tracyâs glasses.
Without them her aunt wouldnât have been able to see very far. She never went anywhere without them. Took them off to go to sleep, then put them right back on before even getting out of bed.
